Carolina Day runner bidding for state championship as a junior

ASHEVILLE β€” Trevor Sleight can disappear into a wooded area for hours while enjoying one of his favorite and most serene pastimes, bird-watching.

β€œIt’s a peaceful way to relax and something I enjoy,” Sleight said.

Now, put those same woods on a cross-country course. And then watch how quickly the Carolina Day junior moves.

Sleight enters this next-to-last season of high school competition with state-championship aspirations and the talent to go with them. The 2010 Citizen-Times All-WNC Runner of the Year may be soft-spoken, but that belies a strong belief in his ability.
