Ruehl, Hawks Fare Well At NC Opener

CHAPEL HILL – North Buncombe’s Katarina Ruehl won the 3,200-meter run and ran a leg on the winning 4×800 relay team to lead the Hawks to a third-place finish in the North Carolina Indoor Opener.

The North Buncombe girls finished in a tie with Southern Durham (28), behind Durham Jordan (32) and Oakton (33) in the final team standings.

Ruehl, a junior, captured the 3200 in 11 minutes, 46.83 seconds. Along with  Allison Fox, Julia Bennett and Paige Shook, she helped the Hawks win the 4×800 in 10:34.90.

Ruehl’s fellow teammate, Sage Proffitt continued her climb up the list of NC’s most prominent pole vaulters of all time.

Proffitt cleared 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to claim second place.

She became the fifth girl in history to vault 11-6 or higher; indoor, in the state of North Carolina, according to NCPrepTrack.com.

Proffitt’s mark ranks at the top of 3-A and is second among all classifications by NCRunners.com. She also checks in at No. 6 in the latest national rankings by MileSplit.com
